The Lafayette Sudbury School is a non-profit, bilingual (French/English), K-12 school that follow the Sudbury model of education. Our campus is located near the Village of Maurice, a few miles south of Lafayette in Louisiana.
A Sudbury School is a place where students of all ages learn to take responsibility for their education and their lives in a democratic and free environment.
The first Sudbury school, the Sudbury Valley School in Framingham, MA was founded in 1968.
Our mission is to offer a true alternative to traditional schooling for parents and students in Acadiana.
We believe that the Sudbury model delivers young adults capable of leveraging their unique gifts into 21st-century success, while most schooling practices today work against that outcome.
If the following paragraph, from the Sudbury Valley School website resonates with you, we would love to hear from you:
At Sudbury Valley School, students from preschool through high school age explore the world freely, at their own pace and in their own unique ways. They learn to think for themselves, and learn to use Information Age tools to unearth the knowledge they need from multiple sources. They develop the ability to make clear logical arguments, and deal with complex ethical issues. Through self-initiated activities, they pick up the basics; as they direct their lives, they take responsibility for outcomes, set priorities, allocate resources, and work with others in a vibrant community.
We are currently looking for parents and students who believe that people (children and adults alike) learn best when they are pursuing their own interests and that when they are free to follow their curiosity, continued interest and ultimate satisfaction will follow.
